hurc still can't do 10 chin-ups/pull-ups...
Years ago, at L&Y's holiday get together if I remember correctly, I had made a resolution that within the year, I would be able to do 10 chin-ups or pull-ups, I don't actually remember which one I had said.
No, I still can't do them. At least, I don't think I can.
For the past few months, gravy and deviline have been trying to recruit people to do the Ottawa marathon, or at the very least, the 10k. At first, I was intrigued, but I just felt that I didn't have the motivation or the drive to stick with the training. Maybe because I only saw them every so often, the encouragements were few and far between, so I lost interest pretty quickly.
Turns out that a few of my co-workers were thinking about doing it for the first time as well. They also tried to sell this to me, and I was very reluctant to accept. But you can't run away from people at work. They know where you sit. They eat lunch with you. They know your desk phone number. Finally, they hounded me enough and convinced me...
So I signed up for the 10k today at the Running Room close to work. Early signup ends tomorrow, so if I wanted the cheap entry fee, this was it. I also took the opportunity to get myself a decent pair of running shoes, and not just Nike's because they look nice.
Granted, this is nowhere near as ambitious as Amy's half marathon but it's still going to take some dedication from my part to train regularly...
14 weeks before the big day...
Anyway, how's that for a first post in months?

congrats hurc, especially for being reasonable. I seriously don't understand why people have to set a 1/2 as a first goal. Sure, you can do it, but you probably won't enjoy it.
Hope you meet some good people at the Running Room.
thanks dude. any tips?
honestly, you gotta run. Its like any sport. The more you do it, the easier it gets. Simple as that.
If you want to just finish, and enjoy yourself, when you run, run ez. So a perceived effort of 50% to 80%. As you get better, my coach's saying was that if you can hold your breath while running for 10 seconds without gasping for air afterwards, that's Easy.
If you run everyday and one day is hard, go easy the next.
Last but not least, regarding distance, no point in doing anything more than 1.5x to 2x your race/goal.
10% rule, only up your mileage by 10% a week. And one long run during the week will help you a lot. But if you can't find the time to run, 30mins a day is good. If you're aiming late May (Ottawa right?) I say run easy up until at least April. If you want speedwork, do it after that point, and only once a week.
My advice is to get out and exercise as much as possible. In order to achieve this, you'll want to get rid of anything that keeps you holed up in your apartment. I'm willing to take the tremendous burden of holding on to your TV and Wii while you're training, and I won't even charge you a storage fee!
wait... why do you want to hold on to my Wii?...
Dude. I am waiting for new posts. Please post some new blog entry. I want to know what hurc does in Ottawa. Any training update? Hope that's moving along!
hehehe
